The gardenia is a shrub that everyone wants to grow. It’s hard not to fall in love with its cream-coloured perfumed flowers, enjoy that scent in your garden or pick a posy to spread the fragrance indoors. Even in late autumn to early spring when these neat evergreen shrubs aren’t flowering, they still look good due to their glossy green leaves. As well as being appealing in flower, the gardenia is very versatile: it can be grown as a standalone shrub, as part of a hedge or in a container. With a bit more work the shrubs can be trained into standards to form a tall stem with a ball of leaves and flowers. Gardenias need a warm climate to grow.
