With its scaly, spiked skin atop a prickly cactus, it’s easy to see how this wondrous fruit gets its name — it does everything but breathe fire. Dragon fruit comes in white-, pink-or yellow-fleshed varieties speckled with tiny black edible seeds and it has a magenta-pink or yellow skin. It originates from tropical Central and South America but is also a staple in many parts of Southeast Asia. In Australia, dragon fruit will grow happily in warm, frost-free areas but in cooler regions you could try growing it in a greenhouse. Ideally, the plant should never be subjected to temperatures below 10°C.
