WHILE MAKING IT HARDER FOR WEEDS TO COMPETE WITH PLANTS, MULCH, AS IT BREAKS DOWN OVER TIME, ADDS ORGANIC MATTER TO THE SOIL, IMPROVING ITS FERTILITY AND STRUCTURE. Mulching is like spreading a blanket over your garden to protect it from extremes of heat and cold and to hold in precious moisture. When the sun is hot, soil tends to dry out and harden. Mulch helps prevent the soil and your plants from baking. At the same time, in a cold snap it retains heat, just like a doona. The magic of mulch is its permeability, which means it lets water in readily yet slows down the rate of evaporation.
