What’s your style when it comes to buying poultry: a well-researched and organised approach or a spontaneous decision you’re inadequately prepared for? I must confess to staying well away from poultry auctions; it’s too easy to get a rush of blood to the head and throw caution away. Half the fun of getting chooks is working out which breed(s) will best suit your needs. There’s a wide range to choose from, all unique looking and each with specific traits. One trait we all need to seriously consider is heat tolerance. It can be heartbreaking losing birds during a heatwave because they’re poorly suited to summer conditions. Profusely feathered breeds with bottoms like feather dusters don’t fare as well as close-feathered breeds with little thigh and rear-end fluff. Bird size requires consideration, too. You may have…
