From covering bare patches in the garden to spilling over walls or from pots, groundcovers are versatile plants. They can help supress weeds and provide habitat for beneficial creatures in the garden, such as small birds and lizards including water dragons.
There are many beautiful native groundcovers that feature attractive flowers or new growth, as well as some edible ones such as Carpobrotus and Disphyma.
In addition to plants like the fan flower (Scaevola) that naturally grow as groundcovers, there are many cultivars and selections of plants, such as Banksia, chosen for their low spreading growth habit.
Some, like Acacia baileyana ‘Prostrate’, can even be grown as grafted weeping standards that make stunning feature plants, cascading down from a central stem.
