China rose
WITH SINGLE OR DOUBLE FLOWERS IN RED, PINK, YELLOW, ORANGE AND EVEN PURPLE, VIOLET AND SHADES OF BROWN, CHOOSING WHICH HIBISCUS TO GROW IS A TOUGH CHOICE. Hibiscus flowers bring back memories of beachside holidays and tropical islands. The island of Hawaii has claimed the hibiscus as its state flower and the shrub is often called Hawaiian hibiscus. Yet, despite that common name, hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) is native to China. Its oriental origins are commemorated in the plant’s species name rosa-sinensis or “rose of China”. Hibiscus shrubs grow in most areas except where there are very cold winters as they are not frost tolerant. In areas with hot summers but frosty winters, grow hibiscus in large containers to move into a sunny, frost-free position during winter.
