DAHLIAS By Ulrika Grönlund, Hardie Grant, $34.99 Originally a mountain wildflower from Mexico and Guatemala, the lovely dahlia was a feature of Aztec gardens and, like Montezuma’s gold, was plundered by the Spanish conquistadors and spirited off to Europe. Since 1800 it has been crossbred into more than 64,000 named varieties in myriad shapes and colours. Swedish designer, stylist, photographer and writer Ulrika Grönlund is a dahlia grower herself (the flower was named for Swedish botanist Anders Dahl) and her enthusiasm is evident in her full-colour, 100-page directory to 222 popular varieties.
