Okra is an unusual vegetable as it is part of the hibiscus family and related to cotton and ornamental hibiscus. It’s also both ornamental and productive and can be grown in the vegie patch, in the garden or even in a large pot. The part we eat is the long, finger-like ribbed pod that forms after the small, cream or yellow flower — which looks like a small hibiscus — blooms. Another feature of okra sounds a bit strange. When cooked, the pods become mucilaginous (gluey), which is why this vegetable stars in soups, stews and gumbos: it adds body as well as flavour.
