ESPRESSO GECKO

Common name: Common house gecko, Pacific (or Asian) house gecko Scientific name: Hemidactylus frenatus One morning last summer, when our resident gecko fell off the verandah ceiling and landed right in my coffee cup, I don’t know which of us was the more startled. I was surprised because up until then it had been more heard than seen, its cheery “chick-chick-chick!” resounding through the house from its hiding place in the walls as it dined on summer bugs. In addition, the common house gecko, native to most of Southeast Asia and moving slowly from Australia’s Top End to more southerly climes, is primarily nocturnal — definitely not a morning person. On the Subcontinent it’s considered a good omen if a gecko falls on a person’s right shoulder, rather than the left. I’m not sure…
