MANY VARIETIES TODAY AREN’T SUITABLE FOR FARM PRODUCTION BECAUSE THEY HAVE SOFTER FRUIT WITH A SHORTER SHELF LIFE, BUT THEIR FLAVOUR IS NEXT LEVEL. Before becoming a garden crop, wild strawberries were foraged not only for the fruit but also for the plant’s proclaimed medicinal properties. Ancient texts reference strawberry fruit and leaves as a tonic to clear toxins, aid fertility and ease digestive problems. Strawberries also appear frequently in European mythology as a symbol of love: it’s said that when the fruit of a strawberry is shared with another, it will bring romance. Even now, this red, heart-shaped fruit from the Rosaceae family remains a popular Valentine’s Day gift.
