COOL & TEMPERATE VEGIES It’s harvest time as crops planted in summer ripen. Pumpkin, tomato, squash, zucchini, beans and cucumber are ripening. Keep harvesting regularly to avoid losing crops to overmaturity. Share what you can’t eat fresh or preserve at home. Local produce swaps are busy at this time and a good place to trade your bounty for crops you don’t have. Some plants begin to wind down now, particularly cucurbits such as zucchini and squash, which are affected by powdery mildew. This shows up as a white powder across the leaf surface. Affected leaves begin to die back and become withered. Remove the badly affected plants rather than attempt chemical control of this fungal disease. As crops ripen, leave some to mature for seed.
