Common name: Variable ladybird, common Australian lady beetle Scientific name: Coelophora inaequalis If you’ve encountered tiny yellow beetles that don’t seem to wear the usual black spots in the usual pattern, never fear — they are actually ladybirds. They may have black stripes, dots, messy splotches or even double crosses on their wings. Let’s call it individual expression. Scientists have dubbed these little rebels variable ladybirds and scholarly papers have been written about the different patterns and how they’re transmitted from generation to generation. Suffice to say they still do their fine work in the garden, hunting down and eating those pesky aphids. So who cares if they flout the dress code?…
