GETTING TO KNOW THE BIRDS IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD By Darryl Jones, NewSouth, $34.99 Darryl Jones is fascinated by the interaction between birds and humans in urban settings, a subject he explored in his engaging book Curlews on Vulture Street. This time he’s compiled a guide for beginner twitchers covering 139 common Australian species, many of which can be spotted in backyards from Cairns to Perth. Each entry gets a witty intro (plovers are “noisy, fearless and intimidating”) with notes on habitat and diet and tips on how to distinguish similar birds — so you’ll never again mistake a currawong for a magpie or an eastern koel for a drongo.
