Rutaceae or citrus would have to be one of the most popular families of fruit trees. Most of us can name lemon, orange, mandarin, lime, grapefruit and cumquat, with tangerine, tangelo and lemonade not far behind. But there are others in the family you may be less familiar with. Some might whet your appetite and add some citric curiosity to your garden — think perfumed monasteries, cola drinks and Thai curries. These uncommon varieties are just like any other fruiting citrus tree to grow: they require full sun and soil well prepared with loads of organic matter such as compost and well-rotted cow or poultry manure. Watering must be consistent during establishment and fruiting as well as times of drought. Apply an all-purpose organic fruit and citrus fertiliser four times a year plus compost…
