Sweet peas are one of the most rewarding flowers to grow through winter, with masses of sweet-smelling blooms that are ideal to pick for a vase. They can also bring colour when other plants are dormant and a trellis of sweet peas forms a great living screen. The flowers come in lots of hues including pink, purples, red, white and bicoloured. Sweet pea seeds are sown in autumn and spring for flowers from winter to summer (depending on the variety and climate). They grow best in full sun in slightly alkaline soil enriched with wellrotted manure. Sweet peas climb to 1.8m high and need a tall, sturdy trellis or tripod to support their growth.
