Kiwifruit isn’t the handsomest of fruits. Indeed, the egg-shaped berry is a bit on the ugly side, tan in colour and definitely hairy. But that unappetising exterior hides an eye-popping interior of sweet, brightgreen flesh with black seeds and kiwifruit tastes cool and delicious.
As well as looks, the plant also lacks manners. It’s a large, rambling deciduous vine putting out lots of long canes that need the support of a trellis or framework of wires. An ideal way to grow kiwifruit is across an arch so the fruit hangs down where it’s easy to harvest.
