PHONE APP LOGS A MILLION FROGS A Spalding’s rocket frog recorded in northwest Queensland has become the millionth frog call documented by FrogID, the Australian Museum (AM) app behind the world’s largest citizen-science project about amphibians. Dr Jodi Rowley, curator of Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Biology at the AM and University of NSW and the lead scientist behind FrogID, verified the rare frog’s call, which she likened to a chicken combined with a lawnmower. The millionth frog was digitally captured by volunteer citizen scientist Dr Elliot Leach, an ecologist and newcomer to FrogID. He recorded the Spalding’s rocket frog (Litoria spaldingi) while working near Cloncurry. “I heard the frog calling from over 100 metres away,” he said. “It’s such a distinctive sound, I knew immediately it was a new species for me.” It was the…
