It’s winter for most of us, and what do we think about planting in winter? Well, apart from the peas, brassicas, lettuces and root vegies, that is. Yes, fruit! Often, as food gardeners, we’re inclined to think about vegies and herbs a lot more of the time, which is understandable when you consider most of them are annuals. We’re always pondering on what we’ll put in for the coming season. But the thing about growing fruit is you get to watch it develop and mature, season after season. You form something akin to parent-child relationships with your fruit trees and vines. And there’s nothing like the pleasure you get from the first fig or apple or lemon appearing on a young tree.
