Acouple of years back, when we had a particularly wet summer and were living on an acreage that tended to stay soggy for a while, we noticed teddy bear bees flying into the house during the day and hordes of wolf spiders at night. As both normally make their homes in the ground, we realised it must have been too saturated for them to be comfortable and they were looking for somewhere a bit drier. In fact, a number of our native bees, including the teddy bear and the bluebanded, both frequent garden visitors, are ground-nesting bees. We’ve featured several how-tos on making bee hotels over the years, but here is another type of bee dwelling that makes a lovely garden feature and hopefully a happy home for groundnesting species…
