An unplanned stopover due to a delayed flight allowed me to enjoy the vibrancy of bougainvilleas in Singapore, where mass plantings of this ornamental vine lend vivid colour to highways, parks and city buildings. As I was travelling from the bright greens of a Northern Hemisphere spring to the reality of a bare and leafless Tasmanian winter, that splash of tropical colour en route left a real impact. Bougainvillea is a genus of large, vigorous climbers with vibrant flowers and thorny stems. Many climb more than 5m high but there are also dwarf and compact forms such as ‘Raspberry Ice’, which has bright red flowers and variegated leaves, and the Bambino Series, a number of named shrubby varieties easily maintained in small gardens or in containers.
