It’s a sunny Friday morning and some of the participants in this Perth community garden/op shop are busy setting up a new wicking bed when I arrive. My guide Peg Davies, a founding member of the garden, which has been going since the 1990s, shows me how they put it together using all recycled materials. In fact, everything at Earthwise Community Garden is made from reused, repurposed, recycled or upcycled items, Peg tells me. Leftover timber donated by council clads former fridges and bathtubs to make smart-looking raised beds. These are mostly wicking beds so watering is less of an issue, especially over the summer months when Perth sees little rain.
