If it’s time to bring some newcomers into the flock, consider the Ancona. Thirty years ago, I wrote about them for a poultry magazine under the title A Breed for Recession Times and the points made back then are just as relevant today. Anconas, whether of large or bantam stature, are of moderate size and they’re economical eaters. They are far cheaper to feed than many of the popular big-bodied breeds and their egg output is better. As they are purebreds, egg numbers compete poorly with the laying ability of ISA-type hens, but your Anconas can be expected to be still laying as five-and six-year-olds.
