If you’re mindful of your responsibility to the planet, then developing a sustainable approach to poultry keeping will come naturally. You may be sustainable already or just need to tweak a few areas.

Long-living, long-producing fowls should be the aim. They will become well adapted to local conditions and your management and reduce replacement costs.
Older birds lay progressively fewer eggs each year but their eggs become larger with bigger, nutritious yolks. They’re valuable, too, for sharing knowhow with new or young additions.
If you’re prepared to breed and grow out replacement stock or just want extra birds for the freezer, then a few hens expressing broodiness will be a must.
