HOW TO GROW PLANTS FROM SEEDS Starting plants from seeds is a wonderfully economical way to grow lots of plants, with each seed packet usually containing dozens or hundreds of seeds. Several fragrant annual and biennial plants — such as alyssum, sweet peas and sweet rocket — do best when grown from seed sown direct into the garden bed or pot, rather than being grown in seedling punnets and then being transplanted, so there is no transplant shock. Perennials such as carnations and wallflowers can also be grown from seed, but it’s best to start them in trays or punnets of seed-raising mix then transplant the seedlings into their final home.
