Apricots are one of the most delicious fruits to eat picked fresh from the tree as they ripen in late summer. These stone fruits thrive in warm temperate and especially Mediterranean climates with a period of winter chill. But they particularly hate cold winds when they are in flower and when fruit is developing. In areas with cooler springs and summers, grow apricots in a warm, sheltered, north-facing location to avoid fruit drop. As flowers bloom early (late winter to early spring) they can be damaged by late frost. As well as a warm location, apricots need cross-pollination for good fruit formation. When buying an apricot, take care to also buy its pollinator or look for a multi-grafted tree (also known as a “twoway” tree) that has the pollinator variety grafted on. As there…
