AT FIRST ANNIE TRUCKED IN LOADS OF GOOD-QUALITY COMPOST AND MANURE FROM THE FAMILY FARM BUT AFTER A FEW SEASONS REALISED SHE NEEDED RAISED WICKING BEDS. Annie Malone started gardening at a tender age. She grew up on her parents’ vast dairy and beef cattle property near Capel, a couple of hours south of Perth, and she and her six siblings all had jobs on the farm. “I had my first vegie garden at 10 years old in an old unused chook pen,” she recalls. She grew tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce with runner beans along the wire fence. Her mother Alice was an inspiration with her large vegetable garden, citrus and stonefruit orchard, fernery and flower beds.
