On a Scary Halloween Night

I looked forward to Halloween back in the early 1950s. Mommy, Daddy and I lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., and on Halloween, Mommy dressed me in an old white bedsheet and a scary mask that we bought at the five-and-dime store. Mommy never wore a Halloween costume when she took me trick-or-treating. “I’m too old,” Mommy said. Daddy didn’t wear a costume either. Daddy stayed home to give candy to the children who rang our doorbell. I was happy to trick-or-treat with Mommy until the year I turned 6.
