Granny had a saying for most everything. Come late summer when the trees hinted of autumn, Granny’s overt message surfaced regarding the changing of the seasons: “If life gives you cabbage, make sauerkraut.”
Big secrets were not a way of life for Granny. The acute observer knew by the boiled dishcloth on the clothesline that production of sauerkraut had begun. Granny was, indeed, a “Kraut Maker Extraordinaire.”
I well recall how Granny followed her sauerkraut procedure. The wooden cabbage cutter with its well-worn patina came out of its resting place in the pantry. The 6-gallon Redwing crock found its way from the enclosed porch of the farmhouse to a commanding position in the kitchen.
From the top shelf of the cupboard came the plate emblazoned with a calendar from 1912.…
