In 1957, magic happened. We are not referring to Elvis Presley’s final Ed Sullivan Show performance, or the christening of Graceland. Nor are we referring to The Quarrymen’s (The Beatles) first performance in Liverpool, or the inauguration of American Bandstand, but we are expressly referring to the birth of soul as we know it. In that year, a brother and sister duo — Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton — would combine ingenuity and financial resources to launch a fledgling music label, branding it Satellite Records, and establishing it in the furthest rural outreaches of Memphis, in Brunswick, Tennessee.
