Memphis was the city where Elvis Presley’s recording career began. It was where that recording career ended, too, 23 years after he first walked into the Memphis Recording Service (later Sun Studio) in 1953. It’s a history being celebrated in the new box set Memphis, which presents audio restorations and new mixes of tracks from all of Presley’s Memphis sessions — with a twist. Presley’s sessions at American Sound Studio, the Stax Records studio, and the infamous “Jungle Room” sessions at his beloved home of Graceland are presented sans overdubs, putting Presley’s voice more firmly in the spotlight.
