Unless you live under a rock — or hate rock — you’ve probably feasted your ears on ’90s Soul Asylum cuts like “Runaway Train,” “Black Gold” and “Somebody to Shove” from the 1992 alt-rock powerhouse of an album, Grave Dancers Union. But to be fair — and as evidenced by Soul Asylum linchpin Dave Pirner’s decision to sometimes forgo playing those songs — there’s a lot more to the band than one record. From 1984 on into 2024, Soul Asylum had dropped 12 records. And in fall 2024, Slowly but Shirley became number 13. According to Pirner, Slowly but Shirley is the “best representation of Soul Asylum to this point.” Maybe that’s true, but for a band that’s been around for 45 years and entered the vortex of perpetual reminiscence,…
