Upon their emergence on the music scene in the late ’70s, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers traversed a steady climb to superstardom. With hits “Breakdown,” “I Need to Know” and “Listen to Her Heart,” the band’s first two albums, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and You’re Gonna Get It!, set the stage for their seismic breakthrough with Damn the Torpedoes, the first of three albums produced by Jimmy Iovine. Out now is a new Long After Dark expanded 2-CD (or 2-LP) set celebrating the group’s fifth and underrated album. Often heralded as the dark horse and lesser of the three Iovineproduced albums, Long After Dark deserves better.
