THE human brain appears to rapidly age at three distinct points, experts say — offering hope that interventions could slow the progression of dementia and other cognitive disorders associated with advancing years.
Neurologists in China reviewed MRI scans of nearly 11,000 people who were 45 to 82 years old and used artificial intelligence (A.I.) to measure brain age-related biological changes, such as the organ’s volume and surface area.
“The higher the A.I. predicted age is relative to their actual age, the faster their brain is aging,” explains study author Wei-Shi Liu of Fudan University in Shanghai.
