IF OPENING your medicine cabinet means taking a walk down medical memory lane, it may be time to toss the out-of-date items. Expired medicines can be less effective or even risky, due to a change in chemical composition or a decrease in strength, pharmacists say. Prescription drugs, especially for serious diseases and conditions, should never be used past their expiration date. These include insulin, EpiPens, inhalers, nitroglycerine tablets, seizure and thyroid meds and blood thinners — aka anticoagulants. Out-of-date antibiotics should also be disposed of, as they may no longer be able to treat infections, leading to more serious illnesses and antibiotic resistance. If your doctor advises you to take aspirin for your heart health, discard any pills that are past their expiration date, or if they start to smell like vinegar. Ointments and creams…
