Saving Turtles

Many of the Indian Ocean's turtle trails stop off in Sri Lanka. A string of hatcheries along the west coast raise awareness of marine turtle conservation and provide treatment in tanks for disabled turtles caught by fishing nets. Near Induruwa Turtle Sanctuary in Bentota, four species nest on the beach: leatherback, green, olive ridley and hawksbill. The sanctuary's main project is to incubate turtle eggs and release the baby turtles to the sea. ‘Without intervention, we may lose these beautiful, ancient creatures from our oceans forever,’ said Kapila Sadath Jayakumara at the sanctuary. To counter poaching, locals are paid R2 per egg. Incubation takes 45 to 70 days, safely away from predation.
