TRAVEL Sri Lanka The serene white setting was the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the holiest place of worship in the country and home to one of Buddhism's most sacred objects. Sri Dalada Maligawa stands alongside a pretty man-made lake in an elegant part of Kandy, Sri Lanka's second-largest city. It is where Buddhists from all over the island and other Asian countries pay homage to a dental relic that's of spiritual as well as political consequence. Because whoever possesses the Buddha's Tooth apparently has the right to rule Sri Lanka. Wrapped in scarves and sarongs for decency's sake, we followed the throng, pilgrims dressed mostly in white, in contrast to the exquisite tropical flowers they were carrying.
