While wild trout are sipping microscopic midges and generally playing hard-to-catch this month, you can put plump hatchery rainbows on the stringer almost at will in freshly ice-free lowland lakes around the region. Many waters close to urban areas are managed for high catch rates during fishing openers. If you don’t crave the idea of dangling a wad of nightcrawlers for trout, dig out your camo and shotgun and call in a lovelorn gobbler during spring turkey seasons that are getting underway this month. Or hike high for black bears grazing on south-facing slopes. Or pitch a big wounded-fish imitation to emerging lakeshore vegetation for spawning pike and bass.
