The requisite equipment for forward-facing sonar

There are three basic components for forward-facing sonar fishing, whether you choose Humminbird, Garmin or Lowrance. First is the monitor—and the larger the better. Ten-inch diagonals and up are preferred; most guides and pro anglers are fishing 12-inch monitors presently, and a few even run 16-inchers. Opt for the largest screen you can afford. The second necessity is the steerable transducer, which comes with a shaft mount. Most anglers mount this on the trolling motor, but because this forces the system to look only in the direction the motor is pointed, some prefer a dedicated pivoting shaft that is raised and lowered separately from the troller.
