Want to be a better shotgunner? Take a lesson from a qualified instructor who’s also a bird hunter. Sure, there’s a vast difference between shooting at birds and little orange-and-black disks, but he or she can still help you with form, focus, fit and foot position. Then, remember the adage: “Perfect practice makes perfect.” Go to the range regularly and shoot carefully and deliberately at 50 targets, no more. Fit your gun, even if it’s a DIY “fitting.” Most of us need a bit more length of pull, which is easily fixed with a butt pad. Shoot lighter loads. Unless you’re on a late-season hunt, you don’t need the punch of high-brass, high-velocity shells. At the range and in the field, you’ll ultimately eliminate the tendency to flinch.…
