In the early morning glow of the 2023 Pennsylvania firearms bear season opener, Craig Krause made the steep, pulse-quickening climb up the hollow to the familiar ridge he had frequented for so many years, both as a driver and a stander. He knew from experience that a prime escape trail was located there, and his bear gang was about to start pushing the dense, rolling tract in his direction. The spot absolutely needed to be covered. The sweat barely had time to evaporate from Krause’s brow before the drive approached within earshot. Moments later, he dropped his third Pennsylvania black bear in five years, proving his hunting intuition correct. It was a good day on the mountain.
