Anybody who hunts or fishes in the East surely wishes October could borrow a few days from another month (February and March, we’re looking at you). The waterfowl are winging overhead. The falling water temps inspire fish to start eating for the long winter ahead. Whitetails are starting their pre-rut activities. Black bears and squirrels are strapping on the feedbags. For us humans, all that fish and animal activity means October is an unriveld month to fish and hunt. 1 TAKE AIM AT DOES It seems hard to believe, but in the late 1800s whitetail deer populations in much of the Northeast were so low that some states had to stock deer in much the same way modern-day wildlife agencies stock trout or pheas-ants.
