You hear the griping in turkey camp ad nauseum every spring: “The toms are all done gobbling. I saw them breeding in March already. All the hens are either sitting or brooding.”
As an experiment a few seasons ago, I decided to keep up my spring morning ritual and go out to listen for dawn toms. I heard my last bird on July 4 and there was little doubt that he was aggressively gobbling in an attempt to pick up a hen.
Biologists have told us and outdoorsman know that gobblers don’t really ever quit gobbling.
