The day before my first cobia trip, I asked Capt. Aaron Kelly what time I should arrive at the dock. “Meet me at the crack of 9 a.m.,” the sunburnned and wind-frazzled captain said with a laugh and a wink. I was excited for my first cobia trip, so the late start struck me as a waste of daylight. The next morning, with the sun high overhead, I met Kelly and friends at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. We boarded his 35-foot open sportfisher, Rock Solid, and headed out the famous North Carolina inlet under sunny skies with the summer air warming fast.
