On more than one occasion, I’ve been referred to as a “brookie whisperer.” Truth be told, however, about the only time I whisper to a brook trout is when I’m begging one to take a fly or muttering a desperate prayer. Undoubtedly, my urge to catch brook trout is uncontrollable, and chasing these native fish runs generations deep in my bloodline. I spent many of my school days daydreaming of the fish, envisioning the small mountain streams they call home functioning as pebble-bottomed, crystal-clear aquariums teeming with bugs, crayfish and other small fish. With whirling bubbles and mayflies strewn about, they represent a type of purity that I still can’t quite put my finger on. There is something remarkable about the fact that brook trout have inhabited our home waters…
