The combination of cold air and cold water adds an element of danger to winter fishing. Vermont guide Drew Price offers the following tips for staying safe.
1. Always let someone know where you are fishing and when they should expect you home. Check in with them when you arrive at the river and when you leave.
2. Use a wading staff to lower the chances of a fall.
3. Wear two wading belts: one at your waist and one just below the top your waders. This will limit the amount of water that gets inside your waders should you fall.
4. Bring a complete change of clothes and leave them in the car.
