A few years ago, I was leading a group from a local college fishing club on a trip from Niantic, Conn. We were aboard a well-known charter vessel, originally destined to target bluefish and striped bass in the famous Race. With west winds blowing 15 to 25 knots, the captain felt it best to change plans and fish inside Long Island Sound instead of near the deep and turbulent open Atlantic. We set our heading toward one of the productive nearshore reefs where seas were calmer.
As we approached the grounds, the mates outfitted the students with lighter rods and smaller terminal gear. While one of the crew members set anchor in the shallow water, the disappointed look on everyone’s face was clear—they had had their hearts set on big, hard-fighting…
