There’s no sense in sugarcoating it: August can be a tough month for outdoorsmen and -women. It’s too early to start hunting and often too hot to fish. But with a little bit of planning, and some cooperation from the weather, there are some darn fine opportunities to be had around the region this month. Even in the middle of summer, when lake temps hit their highs for the year, smallmouths come out to play. Sure, you have to change tactics a bit—head to deep-water humps, Carolina-rig a lizard, try a Ned rig, use topwaters in low light—but you also have to know where to go.
