In days of fishing past, St. Patrick’s Day heralded the beginning of the salty season. In the New York Bite, there was nary a skiff to be rented. Meanwhile, caravans of anglers headed to Quincy Bay in Massachusetts, which once proclaimed itself “The Flounder Capitol of the World.” Sadly, pollution has changed all that. Although winter flounder fishing in the Northeast remains a far cry from what the fishery used to be in the early 2000s, winter flatties (Pseudopleuronectes americanus), continue to populate shallow bays and back sounds and around nearshore wrecks and reef sitesf rom Maine to New Jersey.
