Dale Wyman has fished for Massachusetts crappies for 50 years and has a reputation for catching heavyweight papermouths from a litany of places throughout the Northeast. The retired Department of Transportation employee has many favorite waters for spring fishing and offers solid advice for pan-fishermen in the hunt for hefty, roe-swollen slabs. “In spring, target mouths of spawning bays,” he says. “And watch for flats with existing weeds or brush piles. Work from the outsides of the bays and coves, moving inward toward back bays.” Electronics are key to locating and catching fish, but they’re not required if you know the body of water. Since not all crappies move in for spawning at the same time, Wyman says to watch for roaming schools. “They’re typically smaller schools, but the crappies are bigger,” he…
