HOW MAGNETIC TAPE WORKS

The tape head of a reel-to-reel machine is made up of rings of ferromagnetic material. A tiny gap where the head makes contact with the tape produces a magnetic field. During recordings, the field permanently magnetises the ferric oxide powder coating of the tape, recording data by shifting the orientation of the particles north and south. The faster the speed of the tape running through the machine during a recording, the more the signal is spread on the tape, increasing sound quality but causing more tape to be used. When pre-recorded tape is run through the machine, a voltage is induced in the tape head coil and the current is processed as sound.…
